His works have sold to clamouring audiences worldwide, including celebrities and designers. Sticking to a bright and colourful palette, these images don’t faze the viewer at first, until they lean in to see the details, assaulted with an extreme and decadent display of shiny, well-polished taboos, reflecting on society’s deficiencies, truly redefining what the traditional really means to us in this day and age. Acorns are replaced with grenades, birds with dead rats, deer with pigs, and dripping paint proliferates all. His provocative works replace the traditional with hyper-aggressive motifs that deal with touchy subjects such as death, war, pornography, and violence. These objects are exaggerated in Strumbel’s hands, as he redefines them under the aesthetic qualities of pop culture and urban street art, creating a new context, allegorizing social status symbols, and inciting dialogue. His favourite subjects include the über traditional German cuckoo clock, ever-present crucifixes, and the wooden masks of the Alemannic Carnival, elements found in run-of-the-mill Catholic homes. His process involves taking the paradigms of what we consider “home”, “traditional” or “folk art” and fully questions their concepts, eradicating all sense of what is accepted and flipping clichés on their head. Stefan Strumbel (*1979) lives and works in Offenburg.German artist Stefan Strumbel hails from the infamous Black Forest, and is internationally known for his abstractions and reinterpretations of the banal elements that you’d find in the average household. Funky stripes beautifying the choir wall, LED light shining on speech bubbles and comic-book elements, all innovatively adorn the Catholic Church. The re-opening of the newly designed Church on the 1st of July 2011 was recognized throughout all media platforms: Leading print media such as Der Spiegel and FAZ published articles about the 6 meter high Madonna dressed in traditional Black Forest clothing, enthroning with her infant Jesus above the entrance. After initial skepticism towards the project, he soon owned the support of the whole town community even Pastor Thomas Braunstein praised Strumbel’s work as ‘a gift from heaven’. Strumbel approached the church with the idea of a completely modern intervention. In the German village of Goldscheuer, the artist reconstructed the interior of the built in 1962 Catholic Church Maria, help for the Christians. With his transformed objects, Strumbel successfully creates an illusionary world, which reflects societies real maladies. He exposes the mechanism of a society that in its desire for status and the pursuit of consumerism surrenders to the constant attraction of the media. With his art, Strumbel initiates a change in social values: Traditional ideals, clichéd notions of home and the reality of the individual are dissolved and transformed into an aesthetic that becomes an allegory of social status symbols. Strumbel raises significant identity questions with his work: How do I define Heimat? How do I perceive myself? How do I project myself to the outside world? How and through what do I define myself? Another key aspect of this work refers to the concept of ‘Heimat’ a German word that cannot be entirely translated one to one but loosely refers to heritage or home. Strumbel, however, creates both, a unique artificial and artistic aesthetic with his usage of extreme exaggerations in regard to form content. With their colorful and bright surface, the artworks appear as light and shiny pieces of pop art. At first sight, these objects don’t reveal any of the disturbing content but appear as beautifully crafted wooden sculptures. In seinen Uhren-Skulpturen lässt der Künstler Stefan Strumbel Rebellentum und Tradition heftig aufeinanderprallen - und hat Erfolg. By doing so, he puts the objects into a completely new and often provocative context, always pushing boundaries. For more information regarding purchases, shipping, and payment methods, please click.
